Brrrr it’s cold outside

With the temperature outside being -41c and the forecast getting colder here’s a few tips.

  •  Don’t forget your laptop, tablets, or cellphones in the car. With the temperatures this low it will not take long for your electronics to freeze. Well some devices may still work after being warmed up there are many side affects of letting your device become frozen.
  •  It is very hard on the batteries health. The device may work but you will soon notice a significant decrease in your electronics battery life.
  •  The screen could potently crack
  •  Once your device warms up, condensation may occur on the vital parts that make your electronic function.
  •  So to sum it up please remember to bring in all children, pets, and electronics during these frigid times.

Watch out for Microsoft Windows phone scam

ms_scamOne of my regular clients had a pop come up telling her that she was infected and needed to call Microsoft right away for help.

If you don’t know much about computers just know this: no computer or software company will ever call you up on the telephone unless you call them first; just like banks that call you about your account or your credit card. If they do then they are a scam.

Unfortunately in her case she called them before she called me. She called in and they remote in her laptop and cost her $140, for what? She was never told what she had. She also mentioned to me that she noticed that her webcam light came on so she blocked it. The person at the other end asked her why did she cover her webcam?

I told her to keep  an eye on her cam, and the computer starts acting up or slowing down to give me a call. They probably left something on her hard drive to grab some banking or personal information from her. She will definitely need to have her computer cleaned out, I would not trust them. Better safe  than sorry!!

Here is a write up on this scam from the National Post.

Spring cleaning

Spring is in the air and has we do our spring cleaning lets not forget to also clean our computers.

If you can you should insure that the computer vents are not plugged up. If the inside of the computer gets full of dust bunnies (and other things) this will cause the main board to over heat.

I had a call not too long ago where the computer would not start up. This would imply possible power supply issue, but it this case it was beyond the power issue and I had found capacitors that were leaking and bulging. In this case with the age of the computer and running Windows XP it was cheaper for the client to buy another computer.

Goodbye XP

End of Support for Windows XP is Coming

End of Support means that Microsoft will no longer provide automated fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. You will no longer receive Windows Security Updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software that can steal your personal information.

It also means that Microsoft will no longer fix bugs and other security problems with the operating system on your computer which means your system will be much more susceptible to viruses and spyware.  You will no longer be able to buy a new off the shelf printer or software and expect it to work automatically. Many other newer hardware and software items will no longer work.

End of Support for Windows XP is April 8, 2014

It is our recommendation that you seriously consider purchasing a replacement machine, sooner rather than later!
We can also help you transfer your data (documents, pictures, music) from your current computer to a replacement machine and set it up for you.

We can help you upgrade your desktop or laptop to Windows 7 or Windows 8. If you have any questions or would like to have a chat about a replacing your current computer, or installing a different operating please feel free to call me 705 822 7600 or you can email roger.tasse@net-techs.ca.

We can help you upgrade your desktop or laptop to Windows 7 or Windows 8. Yes, that is right, we can still order brand new business grade computers with Windows 7 pre-installed. We can do this because Microsoft allows manufacturers to preinstall Windows 7 Professional on computers with Windows 8 Professional licenses.

Other Microsoft products are also going End of Life?

Microsoft is placing two other major products into End of Life status on April 8, 2014.

Office 2003 and Exchange 2003

Exchange 2003 is a major component of Small Business Server 2003, so SBS 2003 is also End of Life. If you use either Office 2003, Exchange 2003, or Small Business Server 2003 in your business, they must also be upgraded before April 8, 2014 in order to maintain compliance.

Use genuine software

0820.AskGenMS_2D00_EN1Don’t accept anything less than genuine software. Some techs off Kijiji or other online classifieds will offer to install Windows at an extremely low price. That sounds great until you find out it’s pirated and your system won’t update or simply lock up.
